Galway Voices

Stories from the Edge

A youth-led digital storytelling project exploring life in Galway’s Westend through the lived experiences of young people aged 18–35.

Get ready to delve into an experimental audio experience! I did WHAT!? is a work in progress that delves into the lives of young students in Galway City.

Created by young creatives living and working in the area, the project centres voices often missing from official narratives of the city, focusing on the realities of making art, building community and navigating the night-time economy beyond the tourist trail.

Galway’s Westend is a vital cultural ecosystem where artists, musicians and writers gather, supported by the Westend Traders Association. The project positions the area as a living literary landscape shaped by present-day voices, everyday creativity and contemporary urban life.

The project consists of five short video portraits, each a fictionalised story rooted in real conversations with over twelve young creatives from the Westend. The films follow DJs, theatre makers, musicians, visual artists and producers as they balance creative ambition with precarious work, belonging and persistence in Galway.
